Mariners open season with 48-21 win over Becker College Hawks
Worcester, MA After nearly a two hour lightning delay Maine Maritime Academy defeated Becker College 48-21 at WPI’s Alumni Field. It was the season opening game for the Mariners who are now 1-0. Becker drops to 0-2 on the season.
Maine Maritime was led on offense by Brandon Goodrich and Jim Bower who both had 100 yard rushing nights. Goodrich also had two touchdowns. The entire Maritime backfield combine for a total of 365 yards rushing.
The Hawks were led by the quarterback tandem of Ryan Grillo who was 11 for 21 for 122 yards and a touchdown and Karrone Stanley who was 4 for 8 for 117 yards and two touchdowns.
Becker had the first sustained drive of the game. Quarterback Gabriel Prophet (Washington, DC) (4 for 9, 57 yards) completed a 20 yard pass to Ryan Mercado (New London, CT) and a 17 yard strike to Anthony Johnson (Springfield, VA) to break into Maritime territory. On third and one the snap was high over Prophet’s head and the Hawks took a 17 yard loss and had to punt the ball away.
Maine Maritime started their first scoring drive on their own 34 yard line. Quarterback Tyler Angell (Leeds, ME) completed a 17 yard pass to Josh Elwell (Owlshead, ME) to the Becker 47 yard line. On the first play of the second quarter Angell hit Brandon Goodrich (Waterboro, ME) for another 24 yards. Angell scored to make it 6-0 on an 11 yard keeper. The Jim Bower’s (South Paris, ME) point after was good.
After a 27 yard Jason Patterson (Attleboro, MA) return, Maine’s defense held Becker to 3 plays and out. On second and 12 for Maine Maritime, Bower rushed for 14 yards to keep the momentum going and four plays later Goodrich broke free for a 56 yard scamper to make it 13-0, the extra point was missed.
Ryan Grillo (Waterford, CT) replaced Prophet as Becker’s quarterback on the next drive. Grillo came out firing and completed his first pass to Levi Smith (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) for 16 yards, his third pass to Acie Johnson (Lynn, MA) for 5 yards and then a 10 yard throw to Patterson. Becker took a crucial illegal block on third and six and turned the ball over on downs.
On the last possession of the half Jacques Faublas (Canton, MA) caught a 19 yard pass from Grillo and then he hit Johnson for 7 yards and 31 yards to get down to the Maritime 20 yard line. Andre Hayes scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 16 yard reception with no time left on the clock. Kicker John DiNardi (East Haddam, MA) had the extra point and the score at halftime was 13-7.
Then the rains came. A two hour rain storm covered central Mass. The game started at 5:00 pm, the second half kicked off at 8:25 pm.
Maine Maritime came out of the locker room and totally dominated the third quarter. Maine scored 21 unanswered points and maintained possession for over 12 minutes. Becker could not get a first down.
Chris Kates (Lisbon Falls, ME) was a work horse for Maritime on their first possession of the second half. Kates started with two small runs of 3 and 4 yards. He then broke away for 33 yards and finished with a 15 yard run for the score. The two point conversion was good and the lead was 21-7.
Becker committed two costly personal foul penalties for 25 yards on Maine’s second possession of the quarter. Angell rushed for one yard and the score to make it 27-7.
Maine increased their lead to 34-7 on a Goodrich 16 yard rush and Bower kick.
Maine scored again just 96 seconds into the 4th quarter on an Angell 7 yard rush and Bower kick to make it 41-7
Freshman quarterback Karrone Stanley (West Haven, CT) replaced Grillo to start the 4th quarter. On his first collegiate pass from scrimmage he was intercepted by Rob Leighton (Auburn, ME) who ran 69 yards on the return to the Becker one yard line. Vinnie Moulton (Cape Elizabeth, ME) scored one play later to make it 47-7, extra point was good to make it 48-7.
Stanley marched the Hawks downfield and threw his first touchdown of the season to Bryan Childers (Wallingford, CT) on a 28 yard strike to cut the lead to 48-14.
Becker again scored late. Stanley hit Patterson for a 52 yr reception and then the Hawks scored on a 14 yard complete pass to Jakar Turner (Hollywood, FL). Dinardi had the extra point and the final was Maine Maritime Academy 48, Becker College 21
The Hawks return to action at 1:00 pm Saturday when they travel to Worcester to take on WPI.
