Mariners drop home decision to Bridgewater State 21-28

Castine, Maine. – In a game that featured 526 yards, Bridgewater State led the game at half time 21-7, but withstood a fourth quarter Mariner comeback to win by a score of 28-21.

Quarterback Greg Borsari threw for 104 yards on 9 of 21 passing with one interception, but it was his work on the ground that made all the difference. He rushed 11 times for 72 yards, scoring 3 touchdowns (29 yards, 3 yards, 2 yards) in the process. Matt Maroon ran for the other Bridgewater touchdown (31 yards), gaining 46 yards on 6 carries on the day. Also sharing the load was Bruce Burley who had a team-high 11 yards on 21 carries.

For the 1-2 Mariners it was quarterback Brandon Hamilton (pictured right) who led the team in rushing, posting 122 yards on 35 carries as he scored 3 touchdowns (1 yard, 11 yards, 1 yard) on the day. He was also 2 of 11 passing for 42 yards with 2 interceptions.

Defensively it was Mike Sirignano who led Bridgewater with 16.5 tackles and 4.5 sacks on the day. Zane Fyfe added 9 tackles and Casey Florence 7 tackles. Chris Dijak chipped in with 4 tackles and 2 sacks.

For the Mariners Chris Tracy and Nate Bolduc both recorded 7.5 tackles, and Brian Guillerault added 6.5 tackles.

It was the Mariners who opened the game scoring when Brandon Hamilton capped a 12 play, 65 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run at the 9:41 mark in the first quarter. Brian Matthews added the extra point kick to make it 7-0.

Two quick Bridgewater scores then changed the momentum of the game, when Matt Maroon ran the ball in from 31 yards at the 0:58 mark, and then Greg Borsari doubled the Bridgewater lead when he broke free to score from 29 yards out 41 seconds later.

It was Borsari again who ran the ball in with 16 seconds left in the half, this time wrapping up a 4 play, 36 yard drive with a 3 yard touchdown run. Brian DiCristoforo was a perfect 3 for 3 in extra point attempts to leave the Bears with a 21-7 half time lead.

In the third quarter it was Borsari and DiCristoforo who again combined for another 7 points, with Borsari punching the ball into the end zone to finish an 11 play 60 yard drive with 47 seconds left in the quarter.

The Mariner staged a comeback in the fourth quarter, with quarterback Brandon Hamilton capping a 10 play 66 yard drive with an 11 yard run to cut the lead to 28-14. With 2:08 left on the clock, the Mariners got within one touchdown when Hamilton scored from one yard out after a 60 yard drive that consisted of 6 plays.

That was as close as the Mariners got though, with the final score ending up 28-21 in favor of the Bears.
