Mariners defeat Westfield State 22-11 to up season record to 6-2
On Saturday, October 29th the Mariners traveled to Westfield, MA to take on the Westfield State Owls in an NEFC Bogan Division matchup.
The Mariner defense was first to make a difference in the game when, with 8:18 left in the first quarter, Chris Metcalf had the first of five Mariner interceptions on the day. His pick set up a 42 yard touchdown pass from BJ Dunlap to Brandon Goodrich to give the Mariners a 6-0 advantage. Dunlap's kick was good to make the score 7-0.
The Owls got on the scorebaord with 6:30 left in the first quarter when they recorded the first of their two safeties on the afternoon. That made the score 7-2 in favor of MMA.
On the ensuing punt by Dunlap, Paul Russell picked up a Jason Abair fumble to give the Mariners the ball right back at their own 47 yard line. It was then that Don Thibodeau (pictured right) capped of an 11 play, 53 yard drive with the first of his two touchdowns by running in the end zone from one yard out. With 26 seconds left in the half BJ Dunlap's extra point kick was good, and the Mariners went into the half with a 14-2 lead.
Late in the third quarter at the 4:24 mark the Owls closed the gap with a Mark Puchalski one yard run to make the score 14-8. Rory McKeon's kick was good to top off the Owls' 7 play, 52 yard drive and make the score 14-9.
The Mariner defense again came up big with 1:26 left in the third quarter as Joe Blier picked up a Mike Lorenzano fumble and ran it back 73 yards to the Westfield 7 yard line. After a 4 yard run, Thibodeau punched it in from three yards out to give the Mariners the 20-9 lead with 55 seconds left in the 3rd quarter. BJ Dunlap's kick was good to make it 21-9.
From that point on the Mariner defense held strong, and with 12:07 left in the game Chris Metcalf forced and recovered a fumble that prevented the Owls from making another attempt to score. Anthony Gervasio's (pictured right) third interception on the day was the most important when he picked off a Mike Lorenzano pass on the 1 yard line with 1:24 left in the game.
With 18 seconds remaining the Mariners forfeited a safety to give Westfield 2 points and make the final score 21-11.
The Mariners go to 6-2 on the season, and welcome Framingham State to Castine next weekend for the final game of the regular season.
