Mariners lose 21-0 to Fitchburg State College
On 10/15, the MMA Mariners were shut out for the first time this season as they fell to the Fitchburg State Falcons by the score of 21-0.
In the first quarter, the Falcons took a 6-0 lead after QB Corey Hetherman finished off an 8 play, 39 yard drive by connecting with Bob Hirko on a 15 yard score. Treavor Smith’s extra point kick was good.
The Falcon lead was extended in the second quarter at the 1:59 mark when Ryan Miller capped off an 8 play, 34 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. The extra -point kick by Smith was blocked.
The Mariners struggled all day to get their offense into gear, and at the 14:14 mark of the fourth quarter it was Fitchburg who scored again when Hetherman linked up with Justin Sleeper, this time on a 4 yard pass to make the score 19-0. Nghia Tieu rushed to complete the conversion and make the score 21-0.
Offensively Mariner leading rusher Don Thibodeau was held to 51 yards total on 17 carries for the day, and BJ Dunlap was 3-18-0 passing for 54 yards. Cody Schmidt had two catches for 32 yards, and senior WR Derek Mishou had one catch for 22 yards. Brandon Goodrich had two kick returns for a total of 33 yards.
Leading the Maine Maritime Academy Mariner defense was Chris Metcalf who had 15 tackles, 11 of which were solo. He also had one tackle for a 2 yard loss, and one pass break up. For his efforts Chris was recognized on the NEFC Weekly Defensive Honor Roll).
Defensively the MMA Mariners worked hard all day, with Nate Bolduc, Brandon Hamilton and Brian Guillerault each having 8 tackles for the game.
