Maine Maritime Academy honors student-athletes
The Maine Maritime Academy athletic department recognized and celebrated the achievements of Mariner student-athletes at their “Athletic Awards Night” on campus in Castine. Sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Athletic Director Jim Dyer and Senior Women’s Administrator Katrina Dagan presided over the evening’s festivities. In total, there were 56 scholar-athlete award winners recognized at the event including 5 dual sport athletes. To be recognized as a Mariner scholar-athlete a student needs to be on the Dean's list academically, and have participated in a varsity sport.
MMA Female Athlete of the Year - Rebecca Allen. Rebecca helped lead the Lady Mariner Women’s Volleyball team to a 19-6 record, a North Atlantic Conference championship, and the programs first ever berth to the NCAA Tournament. The senior captain from Bucksport, Maine was a three time NAC All-Star and leaves MMA holding ten school records. In 2006 Allen led the nation in Service Aces Per Game. Along with her athletic accomplishments Rebecca has been a Dean's list student every semester here at MMA and was recently named the Scheel Scholar for the IBL program. Allen was also named to the COSIDA ESPN Volleyball Academic All-American Second Team this past fall and was the recipient of the Phyllis Tenney Community Service Award here on the campus of MMA.
MMA Male Athlete of the Year - Chris Tracy. For his achievements during the fall, the linebacker from Westbrook, Maine was named as the Mariner Football team Defensive MVP. The senior captain also made the New England Football Conference 1st team and was honored as the NEFC Defensive Player of the Year. Tracy was an All-ECAC 1st Team selection this season and throughout his MMA career had numerous NEFC weekly honor roll nominations.
In addition, 6 MMA student-athletes were recognized as North Atlantic Conference All-Academic Selections: Kaitlyn Leeman, Women's basketball; Jo-Ann Provencher, Women's basketball; Rebecca Allen, Volleyball; Nicole St. Pierre, Volleyball; Ken Brown, Men's Cross Country; and Mathew Munroe, Men's Cross Country;. To achieve this honor each student athlete must have played their sport for at least two seasons, have junior or senior status, and have a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average.
The Mariner football team had four New England Football Conference All-Academic Selections: Nate Bolduc, Travis Fergola, Nicholas Morin, and Chris Tracy were selected for this honor.
During the 2007-2008 athletic slate, the Mariners had 21 All-Conference Selections, two Rookies of the Year (Ashley Tilton, Volleyball and Tatum Welch, Women's Basketball), two Sportsmanship Awards (Men's Soccer and Men's Lacrosse), and the NEFC Defensive Player of the Year. Two Lady Mariner Volleyball players were nationally recognized for their achievements in the classroom this season. Nicole St. Pierre was named to the COSIDA ESPN Academic All-American 1st Team while Rebecca Allen was named to the COSIDA ESPN Academic All-American 2nd Team.
