Mariner Club

The Mariner Club is a monthly luncheon for all student-athletes and coaches at Maine Maritime. It is a time to reflect on the monthly academic and athletic achievements of our varisty sports and the athletes at MMA. Each month a male and female is awarded the Mariner Athlete of the Month for their efforts on the playing fields.

February 2010

Male Athlete of the Month

Ben Russell - Basketball - Freshman - Guard - Farmington, ME

Ben was the Mariner Men's Basketball leader in total points this season with 242. He ranks second in the state and the North Atlantic Conference in 3 pt. field goal percentage at 44.1. He led the team in assists with 80 which placed him tenth in Maine and fourth in the NAC. His 1.4:1 assists to turnover ratio also led the team. His 42.2 FG% led the Mariners guards, was second FT% at 86.3, and had 78 defensive rebounds which tied for most among the team's guards.







Female Athlete of the Month

Katie Pushard - Basketball - Junior - Guard - Winthrop, ME

Katie led her team to a 6-1 month and a trip to the final four of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament. Pushard had 28 assists in seven games and only 8 turnovers while compiling 18 rebounds, 39 points and 8 steals. The junior point guard also hit the biggest shot of the season when she nailed a jumper with 7.9 seconds left to give MMA the lead and eventual win over Castleton this past weekend. The win helped secure the #2 spot in the upcoming NAC tournament for the Lady Mariners.
