NCAA Rules Compliance
Operating in compliance with NCAA Rules, especially as they relate to recruiting and possible extra benefits for current and prospective student-athletes, is an important goal for Mariner Athletics. The following summary answers some frequent questions and provides a quick review of what kinds of activities are permissible and what are not.

An extra benefit is defined by the NCAA as any special arrangement by an institutional employee or a representative of the institution’s athletic interests (alumni, supporters) to provide a student-athlete (or the student-athlete’s relative or friend) a benefit that is not generally available to other MMA students or, not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation.

Permissible Activities:
- An MMA employee may provide occasional and reasonable local transportation to a student-athlete.
-
On infrequent, special occasions, a student-athlete may accept an invitation to the home of an MMA employee or a representative of MMA Athletics’ interests, for a meal.
-
You may employ and pay a student-athlete for work actually performed. The pay must be at a rate commensurate with the going rate for similar services in the locale.

Non-permissible Activities:
- Student-athletes may not use institutional copy machines, fax machines, or make long distance telephone calls using MMA access codes.
-
MMA employees or representatives of its’ athletic interests are not permitted to write or type reports or papers for student-athletes.
- Student-athletes or prospective student-athletes (recruits) may not accept any of the following extra benefits from a MMA employee or representative of its’ athletic interests:
...
Gifts of any kind; including clothing, money, tickets, etc.
...
Reduced rental cost or free housing or storage.
... Reduced cost or credit for any merchandise or services.
